In this chapter, we have discussed the Oracle Clustered File System (OCFS). At the time of this writing, OCFSl is in production at many sites on Oracle 9.2,10.1, and 10.2. However, it only supports the 2.4 kernel; therefore, it has a limited lifespan, as both SUSE9 and Red Hat 4 implement the 2.6 kernel. 0CFS2 supports the 2.6 kernel, but at the time of this writing, it is only supported on Red Hat 4 32-bit platforms, and its future is very much in the balance. We anticipate that greatest number of new RAC deployments will be on x86-64 platforms, so the long-term prospects for 0CFS2 will continue to be in doubt until it is certified on x86-64, at a minimum. At the current time, it is not certified on SUSE distributions or Itanium platforms. Therefore, if you wish to take advantage of the newer Linux distributions, you may need to look elsewhere for a clusterfilesystem. In the next chapter, we will discuss Automatic Storage Management (ASM), which offers an alternative storage management option to OCFS.

Automatic Storage Management (ASM)

In this chapter, we will describe ASM, which was introduced in Oracle 10.1 and is intended to simplify storage administration by automating disk and file management tasks to reduce management overhead and deployment costs. ASM is a generic alternative to OCFS that works on all platforms. ASM provides similar functionality to OCFS but includes volume management capabilities, such as disk balancing and redundancy. If you are using the Oracle Database lOg Standard Edition with the free RAC option, you must use ASM for datafile storage. In our experience, with the introduction of Oracle 10.2, ASM has become the most popular choice for storage management on new deployments and has reached relative maturity in a remarkably short period of time. Because of uncertainty over the future of OCFS, many customers are opting for ASM, which has the benefit of being a fully integrated core Oracle product. We will begin this chapter with an introduction to ASM. Then we'll discuss ASM installation, instance configuration, components, administration, and monitoring.

ASM builds on technology introduced in Oracle 9.0.1 by the Oracle Managed Files (OMF) feature, which automates the creation and deletion of database files, including datafiles, control files, and online redo logs. Under OMF, tablespaces can be managed without reference to file names. ASM can be used with both single-instance and RAC databases. ASM can manage many types of database files including datafiles, tempfiles, control files, online redo logs, archive logs, and R A backup sets. It can also manage some of the file types introduced in MN more recent releases, such as server parameterfiles,change tracking files, and flashback logs. ASM reduces management overhead. It is designed to allow an Oracle DBA to perform most disk management tasks. For some sites, ASM can potentially replace a Logical Volume Manager (LVM) or RAID system. However, for many larger sites, ASM will offer fewer benefits as the complexity of storage management and related network infrastructure will still require speciaHst knowledge. The complexity of managing large numbers of disks is reduced by assigning each disk to a group of disks with similar characteristics that can be managed together. ASM can perform some of the tasks, including striping and mirroring, that previously required third-party storage management products, potentially providing increased reliability and performance. By default, ASM implements two-way mirroring to maintain a redundant copy of data to provide fault tolerance but, for particularly important data, can also implement three-way mirroring.
